Bodmin & Wenford Railway offers a trip into
nostalgia with steam trains operating from the historic town of Bodmin
through scenic countryside along the preserved six-mile Great Western
Railway branch line to Bodmin Parkway (for walks to Lanhydrock House) and
Boscarne Junction (for the Camel Trail footpath). Steam locomotives include
a G W R pannier tank which returned to steam in 2001. The 60 year old engine
was rescued from a scrapyard in 1981 & last July it was back in steam for
the first time since 1965! The line is Cornwall’s only standard-gauge steam
railway, located about 8 miles from Eden. Bodmin General station (in Bodmin
town centre) has a refreshment room & souvenir shop.
Trains run on selected dates from March to December and daily May 26 to
October 1st. Special events include annual visit of “Thomas the Tank Engine”
July 25 to August 4 and Steam Gala September 6/7 . Evening specials
run on 33 nights between May & September offering a variety of music,
vineyard visits & Murder Mystery!
